Herman
and
Vernice
Goschie
were
friends
and
schoolmates,
and
married
in
1945.
Herman
succeeded
his
father
in
the
family
farm,
and
became
interested
in
community
service.
He
was
elected
to
the
hospital
board
of
trustees
in
the
1980s
and
led
a
board
committee
to
plan
needed
hospital
improvements.

Herman and Vernice Goschie
Herman
learned
that
other
hospitals
had
started
foundations
as
a
way
to
encourage
community
members
to
support
their
local
hospital.
His
idea
was
received
so
warmly
by
his
colleagues
that
they
asked
him
to
create
a
Silverton
Hospital
Foundation.
In
1986,
Herman
Goschie
was
elected
its
first
chairman.
Since
then,
he
and
two
of
his
daughters
have
served
on
the
foundation
board.
The
Goschie
family
farm
reached
its
100th
anniversary
in
2004.
Their
success
in
agriculture
and
community
service
is
respected
and
valued
for
the
many
benefits
that
come
from
their
efforts.
Herman and his daughters are succeeded today by a board of 15 local residents who advocate for their hospital. Their credibility and example influence others to join them in supporting efforts to improve medical care.
