Map & DirectionsAn overnight sleep study (polysomnogram) simultaneously records heart rate, brain waves, breathing, oxygenation and eye and leg movement while you sleep and will help identify and diagnose any abnormalities.
Your Sleep Study
A Sleep Lab technologist will attach wires and sensors – small metal discs – to the skin of your head and body using an adhesive. These sensors monitor activities in your body during sleep. The technologist will place flexible elastic belts around your chest and abdomen to measure your breathing, and a clip on your finger or earlobe to monitor your heart rate and the level of oxygen in your blood.
Technicians will stay awake all night in a separate room to monitor your sleep. If they detect a breathing problem during your study, a technologist may awaken you to ask you to try a device to help you breathe.
In the morning, a technologist will detach the electrodes and monitoring equipment. You can then shower and dress prior to discharge. But before you go, you are invited to visit our cafe for breakfast on us.
Test Results
After your test is complete, a trained sleep technologist will review and interpret the recorded information. The study and results are then sent to our sleep physician for final interpretation. If the sleep physician determines that you have a sleep disorder, a course of treatment will be recommended. Options for these disorders may include medications, surgery, dental appliances, mechanical devices including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), or behavioral treatments.
Physician Referrals
A referral from you primary care physician is required in order to participate in a sleep test. In most cases, insurance will pay for this diagnostic procedure, but check with your insurance provider to be sure.
